If bitcoin was created years earlier, would we see the same rate of mining hardware evolution?

It seems like there has been a steady progression from CPU mining, to GPU, FPGA, and now ASIC, and it all happened in a relatively small amount of time.

If bitcoin was created in say, 2005 instead of 2009, and popularity grew at the same demand, would we likely see FPGA/ASIC hardware years earlier than we did, or would this be highly improbable at the time due to the then current technology?
