Previously, I kept the Bitcoin Core daemon running 24x7, however recently I've become less interested in keeping it running all the time, and would like instead to run it for as much time as it takes to ensure the blockchain is no more than a few hours behind.

I'm using a Powershell script to connect to the Bitcoin Core daemon running on Windows. The script gathers the output from bitcoin-cli.exe getblockchaininfo into a json object to check blockchain verification progress.

I've scheduled a task to start the bitcoind process, and my Powershell script checks the output from bitcoin-cli every 30 seconds, waiting until verificationprogress is at least 0.999999 before shutting down the daemon.

Once verificationprogress is at 0.999999 or higher, the script shuts down the daemon, until the next time it runs about 4 hours later. I've noticed that the next time bitcoind starts, it is re-downloading blocks it downloaded the last time it ran. My script checks the number of blocks downloaded vs the number of block headers available, as well as looking at the initialblockdownload boolean indicator before exiting.

Is there something else I should check other than the verificationprogress output from bitcoin-cli.exe getblockchaininfo ?

This is the Powershell script, in case anyone is interested:

  • It seems to me you're not giving Bitcoin Core the time to shut down completely. There is (a) no log message in the first part about having flushed the database and (b) on restart, the tip has moved backwards. On normal shutdown, it should continue exactly where it left off. When bitcoind re-verifies blocks, it is not redownloading them. It is just loading them from disk and making sure that the databases are consistent. Bitcoind will always re-verify a small number of blocks on startup to make sure that its databases have not been corrupted.

You should use the initialblockdownload field instead of verificationprogress. It is just a boolean and it checks more heuristics to determine whether the node is still syncing.

  • Thanks for taking the time to answer. My script checks the number of blocks downloaded vs the number of block headers available, as well as looking at the initialblockdownload indicator already, but the next startup results in many blocks being downloaded regardless. I'll add details from the debug.log to my question.

This is pretty silly, but I wanted to document the issue for future visitors. The problem was in the shutdown portion of my script where it waits 30 seconds for the bitcoind process to shutdown before stopping the custom service I created for the Bitcoin Daemon.

This code looks to see if 30 seconds has elapsed since the daemon was asked to shutdown, however it should be using -gt rather than -lt for the comparison against Get-Date.:

[System.DateTime]$start_of_shutdown = (Get-Date);
While (((Get-Process -Name bitcoind -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue).Length -gt 0) -and ($start_of_shutdown.AddSeconds(30) -lt (Get-Date)))
{
    Start-Sleep -Seconds 1;
};

It should be like this:

[System.DateTime]$start_of_shutdown = (Get-Date);
While (((Get-Process -Name bitcoind -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue).Length -gt 0) -and ($start_of_shutdown.AddSeconds(30) -gt (Get-Date)))
{
    Start-Sleep -Seconds 1;
};

The last section of the debug.log should be similar to this:

2023-10-06T16:35:57Z tor: Thread interrupt
2023-10-06T16:35:57Z Shutdown: In progress...
2023-10-06T16:35:57Z opencon thread exit

2023-10-06T16:35:57Z scheduler thread exit

2023-10-06T16:35:57Z Dumped mempool: 0s to copy, 0s to dump
2023-10-06T16:35:58Z Shutdown: done

i.e. it should say that data was flushed to disk and that shutdown is "done" per that last line.
