I installed bcoin and I get this error about the version:

$ node -v
v8.2.1
$ npm -v
5.3.0
$ bcoin
/usr/lib/node_modules/bcoin/lib/db/backends.js:26
    throw e;

was compiled against a different Node.js version using
NODE_MODULE_VERSION 48. This version of Node.js requires
NODE_MODULE_VERSION 57. Please try re-compiling or re-installing
the module (for instance, using `npm rebuild` or `npm install`).

any ideas why?

This probably happened because you updated your node version after your installation of bcoin. You need to recompile the C++ bindings for the leveldown module to fix this. Checkout npm rebuild: https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/rebuild
