How does a new node get all the previous blocks in a blockchain?

From what I understand, when a new full node is started, it begins by fetching all the previous blocks in the blockchain from it's peers. I want to know how exactly it does that? … Does it ask for a local copy of the blockchain from other peers and save it? In case multiple peers have different chains, how does it resolve? …
