Hierarchical Deterministic wallets or HD wallets are wallets that can be shared amongst different wallet implementation with or without the ability to spend coins.

HD wallets allow you to differentiate a public master key with which all addresses in the wallet can be retrieved and a private master key, with which the corresponding private keys can be generated to spend the coins in the wallet.

Like other deterministic wallets, HD wallets need only a seed key to generate an infinite series of addresses. Unlike regular deterministic wallets, HD wallets allow you to create a wallet with all your addresses from which you cannot send coins, f.e. for safety reasons.
